The main shut-off valve: the one move that limits everything else
In a leak, everything is decided before the plumber arrives. But the valve has to turn — and many no longer do.

Where it is, and why to find it now
The main shut-off valve is almost always where the water line enters the building: in the basement or crawl space, on the street side, often near the meter where there is one. It looks like a round handle or a quarter-turn lever.
The time to find it is today. Not when water is running: hunting for a valve in a filling basement, lighting the way with a phone, costs minutes that translate directly into damage.
Locate it, clear the access if boxes are in the way, and show it to every adult in the house. It is the cheapest preventive measure in plumbing.
Confirming it still turns
A valve that is never operated eventually seizes: scale builds around the stem and the handle becomes useless at the exact moment it is needed. One check a year is enough to prevent that.
- Close it fully, then reopen it fully, once a year.
- Reopen slowly: a sudden return of pressure can burst a weakened fitting elsewhere in the house.
- If the handle resists, do not force it — a snapped stem opens a leak at the very point meant to stop one.
- A valve that drips after being operated needs replacing, not further tightening.
- Locate the local valves too: under sinks, behind toilets, at the water heater.
What happens when it no longer holds
A main valve that no longer closes fully lets a trickle through — enough to make a downstream repair impossible to do dry, and enough for a leak to keep feeding the damage.
Replacing it is planned work as long as there is no emergency. In an emergency, the water sometimes has to be shut off at the street before anything can be done, which adds delay at the worst moment.
If you have just bought, check this valve in the first few weeks. It is one of the few points in a plumbing system anyone can verify in five minutes, and one whose failure costs the most.
