Sump pumps: installation, replacement and backup pumps
A sump pump works when nobody is watching: it evacuates the water the foundation drain brings under the slab. As long as it runs, the basement stays dry.
Its weak point is well known: it needs electricity, and outages arrive precisely during the storms that work it hardest. That is what a backup pump is for.
In Chambly it is not optional — by-law 2024-1519 requires the pump to “be supplied by a backup system in the event of a power failure”.
Does this sound familiar?
- The pump runs constantly, or no longer starts at all
- The pit fills and the water does not go down
- The pump is noisy, vibrates or stalls
- There is no backup pump for outages
- Water rises in the basement during heavy rain
- The discharge line has no backwater valve
How we work
We look at the pit and the incoming water
A pump running constantly does not always mean a faulty pump — sometimes it is the foundation drain or a changed water table.
We size it to the real flow
An undersized pump wears itself out; an oversized one short-cycles and wears out too. The right choice depends on what the pit actually receives.
We install the pump and its valve
A backwater valve goes on the horizontal section of the discharge line, downstream of the pump, so evacuated water does not fall back into the pit.
We add the backup pump if wanted
Independent power so protection holds through an outage — required by by-law in Chambly and strongly advised elsewhere.
